Have you ever heard the Taylor Swift song titled: We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together? As I heard that song the other day, it made me think. I hope that your clients are not singing that song when they stop working with you. If you think about the message of that song, the person who sang it is really frustrated. They’ve had enough. It takes more than one mistake to get to that point in a relationship, whether it is a romantic relationship like in the song, or a business relationship.
Clients are very forgiving if you make a mistake once. When they get to the point where they never want to work with you again, you’ve made many mistakes and you’ve done many things that have frustrated them.
To avoid getting to that point, there are a couple things that you can do to keep your clients happy so they don’t sing that song. Number one is to apologize. We all make mistakes and if you take the time to apologize to your clients, they’ll forgive you and move on.
Another thing you can do is appreciate your clients. Let them know that you appreciate their business through thank you notes, thank you gifts, kind words, and just being positive with them. When clients feel valued by a business, they are more willing to let mistakes slide.
The third thing you can do is acknowledge the fact that they are investing their money with you. Acknowledge them as a client. Recognize them, maybe publicly, if it’s appropriate, but let them know that you care about them. Acknowledge them for who they are and for the business that they give to you.
If you do those three things, your clients won’t go away singing that song. Think of the reputation Taylor Swift has for singing songs about all her breakups. She spreads the word far and wide and gives her exes a bad reputation.
